Do you ever think about the greater meaning when you read a paranormal novel? I thought I'd take a look at some of the larger metaphors involved in some of our favorite themes and creatures. Of course it can vary book to book, but overall, this is what I see.
Vampire: Eternal life but at a price. Oh and SEX. Think I'm kidding? Check this out from the Huffington Post.
Ghost: The inability to let go of someone. Fear of death.
Zombie: Loss of control and higher reasoning.
Magic: Power. Wish fulfillment.
Wand: Sometimes a wand is just a wand, you know?
What do you have to add to my little dictionary?
I haven't thought much about the deeper meaning but now that you mention it, it makes a lot of sense! A wand is just a wand, LOL! I love that. I would add ghosts: A fear of death and the unknown.
ReplyDeleteHeather - That's a good addition! Though I think fear of death and fear of the unknown are almost the same thing. Glad you liked my little joke.
ReplyDeleteShifters: an escape, a return/connection to nature.
ReplyDeleteI like those! :)
ReplyDeleteVicki - Good! I like that. :D
ReplyDeleteJemi - thanks, hon!
Great insights. Demons could also represent the eternal conflict we all face with our good nature versus the bad. I find your blog really fascinating!
ReplyDeleteAdriana - I'm so happy you found me and that you are enjoying it! YES that is absolutely a great one that I failed to point out. So silly of me since that's one of the themes of one of my own manuscripts!!
ReplyDeleteThis is brilliant!!! I have never thought about it on that level before. You've made me open my mind though and I love that.
ReplyDeleteThese are awesome. Now I'm thinking outside the box. Thanks.
Jen- wow thanks for the glowing review! ;D So glad I could get you thinking outside the box!
ReplyDeleteThere must be something archetypal in genie/djinni stories, if the enduring fascination with Aladin and his lamp is any indicator. I just finished reading a wonderful one, the Amulet of Samarkand. Perhaps the temptation to play with fire and trickery and trying to outwit powerful, dangerous creatures.
ReplyDeleteMargo - another subject dear to my heart. I will have to check out that book!
ReplyDeleteJust because witch rhymes with...you know what, doesn't mean they are. Okay, some are. Bellatrix LeStrange IS one.
