Do you ever think about the greater meaning when you read a paranormal novel? I thought I'd take a look at some of the larger metaphors involved in some of our favorite themes and creatures. Of course it can vary book to book, but overall, this is what I see.
Vampire: Eternal life but at a price. Oh and SEX. Think I'm kidding? Check this out from the Huffington Post.
Ghost: The inability to let go of someone. Fear of death.
Zombie: Loss of control and higher reasoning.
Magic: Power. Wish fulfillment.
Wand: Sometimes a wand is just a wand, you know?
What do you have to add to my little dictionary?
I haven't thought much about the deeper meaning but now that you mention it, it makes a lot of sense! A wand is just a wand, LOL! I love that. I would add ghosts: A fear of death and the unknown.

Great insights. Demons could also represent the eternal conflict we all face with our good nature versus the bad. I find your blog really fascinating!

ReplyDeleteThere must be something archetypal in genie/djinni stories, if the enduring fascination with Aladin and his lamp is any indicator. I just finished reading a wonderful one, the Amulet of Samarkand. Perhaps the temptation to play with fire and trickery and trying to outwit powerful, dangerous creatures.
