Beauty Queens Extravaganza and Contest!

Boy do I have a post for you! See, my writing compadres, Julie Musil and Leslie Rose, and I have all finished reading BEAUTY QUEENS by Libba Bray. This book is too amazing to be contained in a single post, so the three of us have come together this week to bring you an uber-awesome BEAUTY QUEENS Blog Extravaganza complete with our own beauty contestant profiles and a contest too fun to believe. So make yourselves comfortable for part one, right here, right now.

And with me to review the book I have none other than a beauty contestant, Miss Writer’s Block!

Me: So what did you think of the book?

MWB: It was pretty. *Smiles*

Me: *Cringes away from blinding reflection off teeth* How did the story make you feel?

MWB: Confused and awed. I mean, I can’t even finish my book, let alone come up with yummy stories that work together so well and actually mean something. That’s why I went for the Title. *fingers ribbon*

Me: Thank you, Miss Writer’s Block.
My opinion? Oh come on. You guys know Libba Bray is my favorite author. I may or may not have blackmailed her into taking this picture with me at the SCBWI conference. Either way, this book did NOT disappoint. I’d say lots of good stuff about the genius of it, but let’s leave it at: If you want to be my friend you should read this book.
Now to my fun facts page based off the novel:

Fun Facts About Me

  •         I can tickle myself. (I know weird, right?
  •     I actually almost entered a beauty contest as a young teen. Thank GOODNESS my parents refused to let me do it. I am aware that the Corporation may frown upon this answer but I thought it was relevant.
  •     Libba Bray called me a diva. I’m pretty sure it was meant in a good way. In fact, she signed my copy of the book to “Divalicious”. I want to be just like her when I grow up.

AND the contest!!!
Do you want to win an autographed copy of BEAUTY QUEENS? It isn’t just any autograph either. It’s in true Libba Bray style, and you’ll just have to take my word for it.

If you want to win simply leave a comment telling us one fun fact about you as if you were a contestant in the Miss Teen Dream pageant. You can enter up to three times by commenting on Julie’s blog tomorrow, and Leslie’s on Wednesday. You have ‘till next Monday (one week) to enter, and we will each announce the winner on our blogs next week. Nothing complicated. No extra entries for this or that, though we will give virtual chocolate for spreading the word. U.S. only please (we're poor writers).

  1. Sounds awesome! I know I've read several books by her already... can't wait for this one.

  2. Yup, I looked her up. I read the trilogy! Picked up the first book at the bookstore, and bought the other two as soon as they were out. Can't believe I didn't remember that! My mind must be going.

  3. Whoa! Lisa, are you psychic? I JUST started reading this book last night. I only got through the first chapter before I passed out from exhaustion, but I can't wait to dive back in.

I'd LOVE an autographed copy, so here's a fun fact about me: I have moved 26 times in my life. Yep.

  4. What a fun idea! Beauty Queens is at my library and is on my list to read, so no need to enter me in the contest. :)

  5. Awesome review! And as I definitely want to continue to be your friend, is now a must read!! :-)

Fun fact about me -- I have a star named after me. Actually, it's named after my family, Sipal. I won the Spacecoast Author's of Romance Launching a Star contest a while back and this was the prize. But my kids thought it was so cool that I had the star named simply Sipal rather than my full name to include them as well! (As they are now teens, they've probably decided it's an embarrassment! :-)

  6. He he. Since I live in Canada, I don't have to strain my brain for the answer. I want to read this book once my TBR pile is slightly smaller. :D

  7. I've heard so much about this story!

Fun fact: I'm relentless in a car - I sing and wave at people. Yeah, it's a great way to irritate my kiddos. :) Payback...

  8. Ooh, I've been wanting to read this! Fun fact--my hair is naturally curly.

  9. Miss Writer's Block!!! I love that!!! It's so fun to read these fun facts, and I'm so excited about our contest. You diva, you!

LIBBA BRAY, WE'RE CALLING YOU!!!!!! (stalking, obsessing, whatever)

  10. Oh I loved Going Bovine, and that's why I wanted to read Beauty Queens too. I'm glad to know you loved it!
I'm not going to participate because you know, I don't live in the U.S.
But I think it's a great idea! Good luck! :D

  11. Oh, crap, I forgot the fun fact! I'm a Zumba instructor. When I'm not chained to my laptop writing, I'm bouncing all over everywhere, shaking my hips.

I'm also married to a college president... makes me a first lady. Not too many first ladies are also Zumba instructors, I'd wager.

  12. What an awesome contest! Libba Bray's my favorite author; 'A Great and Terrible Beauty' is actually the book that got me to start reading. So I can't even imagine getting the chance to have a book that's been signed by her!

My fun fact: I can not listen to "Dancing Queen" by Abba without crying.

  13. I really have to get this book! Sounds like a blast - and you've definitely got great taste in authors! :)

  14. I have the book and look forward to reading it. Good luck to the entrants. :)

  15. What fun!
I'm in Australia so I can't enter, but I do have a fun fact:

I can get the lids off jars.
    With my bare hands.

    (Sometimes I scare myself.)

  16. Oh gosh. *fangirl squeal* I loved the Gemma Doyle trilogy! I can't wait to read Beauty Queens! Um, talk about myself? Okay! Sometimes, when I get mad? I swear in French so no one else knows what I'm saying. *shrug*

  17. Fab picture of you and the AMAZING Libba Bray, LIsa. Can I photoshop myself in? Fun Fact - I have no clue how to use Photoshop. Oh, wait I can't enter, I'm one of the pretty blogs giving away the prize. Oops.

  18. I can tickle myself. Now I really want to know how that works. :)

Fun Fact: I'm severely directionally handicapped and get lost several times a year. My husband gets worried everytime I travel outside our hometown and insists I take the GPS, so I can at least get back home.

  19. I've been wondering about this book, now I'm really curious and really want to read it! And seriously, you can tickle yourself? That is awesome.

Fun Fact: I start conversations in the middle of sentences. Even Funner: some of my closest friends can still follow the conversation. ;)

  20. I rarely read YA (so immersed in MG usually) but this one has such a great sense of humor, judging by the cover photo. So I could certainly be tempted...

  21. You don't have to enter me into the contest because I already have a signed copy. :) I'm excited to read it! This post was hilarious.

  22. Oh, I loved this novel! It is hilarious. And Libba Bray's keynote was so awesome at SCBWI LA. Someone will be a very lucky winner indeed.

  23. Sounds like an awesome read! Great fun facts :)

  24. Uh, my answers so far on Julie's and Leslie's really have NOT been appropriate for Miss Teen contest. So for your post, I'm actually digging back into my teen years. No wait, that fact is too embarrassing. Okay, here's a safer one. Fun fact about teenage Margo: she used to bring lizards to school with her and sometimes let them run loose in class. Amazingly, my teachers maintained a high level of tolerance toward this behavior.

  25. Hello Lisa,

That is really crazy you can tickle yourself, lol.

My fun fact is that: I have a twin sister, but I'm the oldest by 7 minutes. :)

    Thanks so much,
