A Little Humor

There's so much talk about the state of the publishing industry these days, what with all the self-pubbing and e-books and all that new fangled stuff. I thought it might be fun to look at the lighter side for a minute and share these videos with you before I give you my real opinion next week. Please take them with humor, no matter which side of the issue you are on. :D

  6. Lisa, these are both funny and serious. I am self-published, but I don't take offense to the videos--probably because I agree with them in so many respects. The third video certainly hit home for me. I spent so much time marketing my first book that I didn't write another one until five years later.

I had a lot of success with that first book, not Amanda Hocking kind of success, but success, nonetheless. Not so much the second book, because I was burned out from the first one, and I was ready for a change, i.e. traditional publishing.

Self-publishing is HARD, and it shouldn't be taken so lightly. A lot of my readers want to know why I'm working so hard to get an agent--why I won't just keep publishing my own books. My response: been there, done that, don't want to do it again.

On the flip side, if one's writing is good, i.e. beta read a gazillion times, proofed, edited, etc, and that person has good marketing skills, I say, "Go for it."

Because even though it was hard work, my self-publishing experience was, overall, a good one.

  8. Bahahaha.... *covers mouth* I do believe I just scared the you-know-what outta my cat. Poor thing!

Thank you for sharing these vids, Lisa! They were awesome and sooo needed after a looong Monday in the office! ;)

  9. They were all a little longer than they needed to be, I thought. Maybe video editing would be a good idea for some of us who give up on the whole harder-than-winning-the-lottery thing?

  10. Whatever time and money people have invested in the direction they're taking - they believe it's the right direction for them. Sticking with it validates their time and effort and money.

They then urge everyone else to do what they're doing, in order to further validate their original decision.

Whatever the endeavour - from publishing to panning for gold - there will be some who strike it rich while everyone else puts in just as much hard work for nothing but heartbreak.

  12. Haha, those were awesome.

I am glad to see options open up for all writers. We do this because we're passionate about writing stories. It isn't right to limit people who want to share.

I do think that people should not be so quick to SP or see it as a money maker (not saying all do, but some have this take)...quality first, ALWAYS. Good enough is never good enough. Take the time to make it great before uploading. :)

  13. Hahah, Lisa,
There's an old saying, "The only ones making money in a gold rush are the people selling shovels."

I also agree with Angela, take the time to make it great before uploading. (Or submitting to agents too!)
