Inspiration

I generally blog about things that I've learned along the way, that I think you might find valuable as well. I try to use new (hopefully interesting) ways of explaining these concepts, because sometimes when things are said a certain way, it suddenly clicks. At least for me. :D

So let me put it out there. Is there something you'd like to hear about? Is there a subject you wish I (or anybody) would cover? Questions you are dying to ask? I want to know.

In the meantime I'd like to leave you some of my favorite quotes. Most about writing, some not. These inspire me, and I tweet them and others. But here's a list for your enjoyment:

"You have to write the book that wants to be written. And if the book will be too difficult for grown-ups, then you write it for children." -- Madeleine L'Engle

"The worst enemy to creativity is self-doubt." -- Sylvia Plath

"You never have to change anything you got up in the middle of the night to write." -- Saul Bellow

"You can't blame a writer for what the characters say." -- Truman Capote

"Truth is stranger than fiction, but it is because fiction is obliged to stick to possibilities; Truth isn't." -- Mark Twain

"Fairy tales are more than true; not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten." -- G.K. Chesterton

"We don't see things as they are, we see them as we are." -- Anais Nin

"I love writing. I love the swirl and swing of the words as they tangle with human emotions." -- James A. Michener

"How do I know what I think until I see what I say?" -- E.M. Forster

"Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value." -- Albert Einstein

"Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened." -- Dr. Seuss

  1. Love that Anais Nin quote. That's usually what therapy is all about. These are great quotes, Lisa!

  2. Awesome quotes! I just like either hearing about you or hearing about what you are learning about in your writing! Anything really. How about giving critiques. :)

  3. Many of my favorite quotes come from Mark Twain.

  4. How do you deal with, or feel about, the fears associated with writing a book, or other piece? Where do you go (internally or externally) to calm those demons? Or do you even have them?

  5. Sarah - I love that one too!! I think of it as filtering through character.

Laura - He he you're already bidding on one!! LOL. Perhaps I will. It seems that sometimes when I give one away the person is too nervous to actually send me the pages! Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. But really people it's just ME. I won't bite. I only write about vampires.

Charlie - He was brilliant!! I love his quotes too.

Dean - Great question!! I will try to address that in a post sometime soon. ;D And hint - OF COURSE I DO. Doesn't everyone?

  8. The quotes are wonderful, each one. I'll return to this post when I need a boost. Thank you.

I love reading about writer's struggles. Not because I want writer's lives to be hard but because writing is.

  13. Those are some excellent quotes my dear! I miss your fun book reviews by monsters and mythical creatures. Those always cracked me up! But aside from that, you entertain me every day. :)

  14. Oh, Seuss is always my favorite. But you have a lot of amazing ones there - and I hadn't heard the one about dragons before. LOVE.

One of the things I love about writers is that no matter where they are in the journey, we have threads that tie us together. And writers are better at articulating that, than most people.

    Questions...
    1) What's the scariest thing you've ever thought about writing (not paranormal scary, emotional scary)? Did you write it?
    2) What's the one thing you want to write one day, but don't think you're ready to yet?

(and if those are too personal, here's an easy one)

    3)Favorite non-paranormal beast. And why. :)

  20. I really love this post! My favorite motivational/inspirational quote:

"If you choose to use your status and influence to raise your voice on behalf of those who have no voice; if you choose to identify not only with the powerful, but with the powerless; if you retain the ability to imagine yourself into the lives of those who do not have your advantages, then it will not only be your proud families who celebrate your existence, but thousands and millions of people whose reality you have helped transform for the better. We do not need magic to change the world, we carry all the power we need inside ourselves already: we have the power to imagine better." Rowling

  22. thanks, I just copied & pasted most of these quotes into my memorable quotes file.

one topic I find very interesting (and haven't blogged about myself yet -so it's an idea for both of us) is: parables in fairy tales & fantasy. Probably my favorite book ever is Till We Have Faces by C.S. Lewis with is both a retelling of a myth and a great parable.

  23. Lighting - that's a good one! I feel like that would be better suited to the Enchanted Inkpot though. I will keep that in mind for future Topics of the week. Thank you.

    Taio - Thanks.

  26. My favorite is the first one. :P**** to those writers who think you have to write down to kids and teens. Nope, you have to write up to them. ;)
